Classes

It’s important at Little Maestros that all classes are delivered in a creative, fun and musical way. Each class has a theme; whether it’s a teddy bears’ picnic, the weather, the jungle, or a trip to the seaside - classes are engaging and aim to capture children’s imagination and excitement.

Classes are held during term time and payment is made on a half termly basis. Spaces are limited to 8 children per class. The familiarity of children seeing the same musical friends each week really helps build their confidence in a warm and friendly setting.

4 - 12 months

Bond with your little one on a musical level alongside other babies, as we explore brand new sounds, instruments, age appropriate songs, phonetics, sensory creativity and help develop fine motor skills.

Whether your baby is desperate to crawl around, or wants to be in the comfort of your arms, this class adapts and evolves around you and your baby.

1 - 2 years

By now your baby/toddler will most likely be wanting to move as much as possible! From floating around the room with our scarves to crawling or jumping into ‘puddles', this class sets the basic foundations of music for your child.

We explore pitch, songs, instruments, timbre, pulse and dynamics. We have focussed sitting down time for our singing and instruments, but the children will be dictating how much movement we do on our feet! Each class is structured to cover improvisation, focussed listening, solo exploration time and group participation and movement. From bubbles, colourful props to parachutes, the class leader aims to keep your child’s focus and having fun is at the heart of everything we do, whilst learning.

Classes have a ‘theme’, in order to really capture the children’s imagination and sense of fun and play.

2 - 3 years

We are off to ‘music land’ to find Mummy, Daddy and Baby bear; this introduces crotchets, minims and quavers (rhythm) in a way that is so natural and fun for children. We continue to explore music through different story themes and children are more aware of things from a more musical perspective. Whether it’s dynamics, tempo, pulse, pitch or rhythm, we really build on the understanding and deeper connection to music.

Children are encouraged to develop their inner and outer voice and by now many can re-lay back ‘pitch’. We progress with this and when the timing is right for each individual, children are encouraged to take ‘solo’ roles as well as work as a group, this really helps with their confidence.

3 - 4 years

By the end of this course, your child will recognise basic music notation before they even start school. From Prokofiev's 'Peter and The Wolf" to climbing up a beanstalk, our themes and deeper musical understanding progresses with your child’s age. sense of pulse and pitch has been really nourished and most importantly, a love of music within your child has taken off!

At this age, children especially enjoy being given more independence and taking on a lead role in a group setting. Whether it’s singing back on their own, conducting the class or leading a call and response pattern, your child will have opportunities to really push their capabilities and grow in confidence while being guided and encouraged at all times.

In this pre-school class, it is suggested that parents watch from the back of the room (feel free to bring a book)! However, every child is different and you will know what’s best for your child. Parents are still very welcome to join in if they prefer to.

Children burst with enthusiasm as they start understanding the sounds and different families of the orchestra (woodwind, brass, string and percussion). As always, our imagination and play helps aid the learning and enjoyment of everything we cover.

Class leader, Hollie Lukas

Hi, I'm Hollie, a freelance musician and music educator. Now as a local Mum of 2 small children, it is even more of a drive for me to get children involved in music as early on as possible and to get them excited about it.  I trained at both the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Royal Northern College of Music. I am a flautist and have freelanced with various orchestras, so you can expect some flute playing woven into our sessions. Over a decade ago I taught early years music classes at Blackheath Conservatoire in London and it has been my dream to set up my own classes once I have a family. This is the first time I am delivering my own carefully crafted syllabus and I am so passionate to get your little one going on their musical journey!

Classes are age specific and every child leaves feeling like they’ve achieved something. It’s vital for me that each individual child feels like they matter, that they’re included, and that they find their spark and joy for music, which is such a universal language and such a gift to feel and get lost in.

I have invested in top quality instruments for my little maestros and props galore! Your child is going to absorb so much musically and I am a huge advocate in boosting my students’ confidence and self belief. I very much include babies in this, they absorb so much and these positive musical interactions can really map out their curiosity and journey into music.
